Choosing Timber That Survives Malaysian Humidity
Kuala Lumpur sits at around 80% relative humidity most of the year. Wood is hygroscopic — it drinks moisture from the air, swells, then shrinks again when the air-conditioning runs. Choose the wrong species or skip the right sealing, and a beautiful table becomes a warped one within two rainy seasons.
The species we reach for
Teak
The gold standard for a reason. Natural oils make teak exceptionally stable and resistant to both moisture and insects. It is the most expensive option on this list, which is why we often reserve it for tabletops and visible surfaces while building the structure in more economical timber.
Merbau
A dense Malaysian hardwood with a deep amber colour that darkens handsomely with age. Very hard-wearing — it is a favourite for flooring — and excellent for counters and stair-adjacent joinery. Its weight makes it less suitable for tall wardrobe doors.
Nyatoh
Often called Malaysian cherry, nyatoh machines cleanly and takes stain evenly, making it a versatile mid-priced choice for frames, trims and furniture that will be finished in a darker tone. It needs proper anti-termite treatment, which we apply as standard.
Rubberwood
The budget-friendly workhorse. Plantation-grown and sustainable, it is stable once kiln-dried but must be thoroughly treated, as untreated rubberwood is attractive to borers. Excellent for painted furniture where the grain will not show.
It is not just the species
Three things matter as much as the timber itself. First, moisture content: boards should be kiln-dried to 8–12% and acclimatised in our workshop before cutting — we check every batch with a moisture meter. Second, sealing: every surface, including the hidden undersides and cut edges, gets finish. An unsealed underside is how tabletops cup. Third, construction: joints must allow seasonal movement. A wide solid panel screwed rigidly to a frame will crack; the same panel on elongated fixing slots will live happily for decades.
What this means for your project
When we quote, we recommend a species per component, not per project — hardwood where hands and water touch, stable sheet goods where they do not. It keeps the price sensible and puts the durability exactly where it is needed. Bring us your ideas and we will bring the samples.
