Planning Banquette Seating That Actually Fills

Walk into any successful café and watch where people sit first. Nine times out of ten it is the banquette — the built-in bench along the wall. Done right, it is the most profitable furniture in the room. Done wrong, it is a padded shelf nobody chooses twice.

The numbers that matter

After eighty-plus fit-outs, these are the dimensions we keep coming back to. Seat height: 45–47 cm to pair with standard 75 cm tables. Seat depth: 40–45 cm — deeper feels like a sofa and pushes diners too far from their food. Backrest: angled 5–10 degrees, never bolt upright. And leave 30 cm between the seat edge and the table edge, or guests will sidle in sideways and choose a chair next time.

Comfort is a supply-chain decision

Commercial banquettes need high-resilience foam of at least 35 kg/m³ density — the softer foam used in home sofas collapses within a year of daily service. For upholstery in a café, we specify fabrics rated 40,000+ Martindale rubs, or easy-wipe vinyls where laksa and lattes are involved. A removable seat pad design means you can re-cover in a weekend years later instead of rebuilding.

Plan the hidden functions early

A banquette is also a box. Hinged seats give you storage for stock and seasonal décor. The plinth can carry power points for laptop customers — decide this before fabrication, not after. And ask your builder for a skirting recess so the mop reaches the floor edge; standing water against a plinth is the number one killer of café joinery.

Layout: corners earn the most

L-shaped corner banquettes turn dead floor area into the most requested table in the house, and window-facing bench bars capture solo customers who would not occupy a four-top. When we plan a floor, we start from the corners and work inward — chairs fill the gaps, not the other way around.
